What makes a photographer’s work distinct, easily identifiable and thus, truly theirs? Understanding their photographic style will deepen your appreciation for their work and inspire you to shape your own. Sounds interesting? In the video above, Alex Kilbee of The Photographic Eye shows us how to break down the styles that different photographers use to bring their visual stories to life.

For this inspiring video, Kilbee invites us to satisfy our curiosity about what goes behind the lens of renowned photographers. For this episode, he discussed the works of Joyce Tenneson, Vincent Peters and Mary Ellen Mark. He explores how each photographer employs a blend of aesthetics, technicalities, and processes to craft their own visual identity, narrative and message. In these examples, he shows us how they make clever use of light, communicate through tonality, and leverage specialized techniques like soft focus.

In these deep dives, the main objective is to be able to better appreciate the artistry of each photographer. Eventually, you may even be inspired to design a distinct photographic style of your own, if you haven’t discovered or established it yet.
