At just under five pounds, the Manfrotto BeFree Pro 3-Way Aluminum Tripod is not the lightest but may be one of the most versatile if you are a video creator as well as a stills photographer. Even with a heavy load as shown above the tripod locks in place very strong.
Note: Manfrotto sent me this tripod for review for Photofocus. All feedback and feelings about the tripod are mine.

Manfrotto BeFree GT Pro 3-Way Aluminum Tripod — Ergonomics and build quality
This is a solid tripod. All connections are stiff and strong. I thought maybe a little too stiff at first but after a little break-in period, some small adjustments with use, all feels good. Panning handles are comfortable soft rubber with a nice positive grip. The pan head lock and knob for securing the camera mount are made of hard plastic with non-slip ridges.
For such a small head the support is strong even when a long lens is mounted. The 13 plus pound rating should cover most photographer/videographers gear with room to spare.
Manfrotto BeFree GT Pro 3-Way Aluminum Tripod — In use
The twist locks are secure but you need to pay a bit of extra attention to them. There were a number of times when I thought I’d set them strong they would succumb to some downward pressure. I’m sure with continued use, I’ll get the feel for when it is twisted enough to lock correctly.
I’m VERY happy there is a way to level the head independent of resetting tripod legs, That has always been a bug-a-boo for me. It’s a little disappointing that there is no level at that location. There are three bubble levels on the head itself but they are no help when it comes to that. There is a leg lock allowing for three separate positions including completely close to flat. With the varying possible configurations working in almost any outdoor location should be a breeze on un-level ground or hillsides.
Manfrotto BeFree GT Pro 3-Way Aluminum Tripod
When you try to wrap too many features into a product it often doesn’t do well for any of its intended uses. Not so with the Manfrotto BeFree GT Pro 3-Way Aluminum Tripod. It works well for both studio photography and videography. If you don’t mind a little extra weight it works well for hiking and trails as well, as it packs small for travel. I’d like to have a little less weight and Manfrotto makes this in a carbon fiber model but I don’t believe the extra $100 is worth the 0.6 pound weight saving. At $329.95 I feel this is a great value for the video + stills image creator, especially if he or she wants to invest in only one tripod.
